Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the environmental benefits of solar hot water?

A solar hot water system uses the sun’s energy to heat your water, instead of electricity generated from coal fired power stations. According to the Australian Government, water heating is the largest single source of greenhouse gas emissions from the average Australian home, accounting for around 28% of home energy use.

How much can I save?

According to the Australian Government, a solar hot water system can reduce electricity bills by between $300 and $700 per year. Actual savings will vary depending on location, system capacity and energy/water consumption.

Is shade a problem?

Solar collectors should be placed in an area that is as shade free as possible. If shade falls on your solar collectors, this will reduce the efficiency of your solar hot water system. If shade is only partial or for short periods at certain times of the day, your system will still provide you with hot water.

Will I have hot water on cool or cloudy days?

Solar hot water systems are fitted with a gas or electric booster as a ‘back up’ to ensure your water is always heated to the correct temperature – even when the sun isn’t shining.

How long will it take to have my solar hot water system installed?

The installation of your solar hot water system takes approximately 3-4 hours, and can usually be installed within 2 weeks of order.

What is the difference between solar hot water and solar electricity?

Solar hot water collectors absorb heat from the sun to heat the cold water which flows through them. The hot water is then fed into a storage tank. Solar PV electricity panels use sunlight (UV rays) to generate electricity to be used within the home or to feed back to the electricity grid. They are different technologies and operate independently of each other.

What is the Australian government’s renewable energy bonus scheme?

The Australian government’s renewable energy bonus scheme encourages Australians to switch to energy efficient hot water systems, such as solar hot water and heat pump systems. A rebate of $1,000 is available when you replace an electric hot water system with a solar hot water system, in an existing home.

When can I apply for a rebate?

Applications for the renewable energy bonus scheme rebate can be submitted following the installation of your solar hot water system.

What is the deadline for applications?

Applicants must apply for the rebate within six months of installing an eligible system.

Are rebates available for new homes?

No, rebates are currently not available for new homes. The renewable energy bonus scheme has been designed specifically to help households replace inefficient electric hot water services.

Can I get the rebate for a system installed on my investment property?

Yes, the renewable energy bonus scheme rebate is applicable only if the installation address is a principal place of residence, including a principal place of residence for a tenant.

When will my rebate be paid?

For successful applicants, the rebate will be paid into a nominated Australian bank account within 6 to 8 weeks of receiving a completed application form.

Are there any other rebates?

Various state and territory governments offer additional rebates depending on eligibility. See Solar Hot Water Rebates & Incentives.
