Small-scale Technology Certificates

Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) are an electronic form of currency, similar to shares. They are attributed to Solar Hot Water and Heat Pump systems. The majority of customers choose to receive the benefit from STCs as a point of sale discount on the price of the system. Ownership of the STCs is then transferred to a STCs agent. The number of STCs attributed to each system depends on the size/output of the system.

Renewable Energy Bonus Scheme - Solar Hot Water Rebate

The Australian Federal Government is currently offering a rebate of $1000 to install a solar hot water system or $600 to install a heat pump hot water system.

Installing an energy efficient hot water system can help you save hundreds of dollars off your energy bills each year. The federal government is helping you make the conversion between electric storage hot water systems and the more environmentally friendly solar or heat pump hot water systems easier by offering this rebate to eligible home-owners, landlords and tenants.

The rebate will be available until March 2012 and applies throughout Australia. The new rebate is offered through the Medicare system rather than as a point of sale discount.

Eligibility Requirements

  • You must not have previously received assistance through the Home Insulation Program or Homeowner Insulation Program for this property.
  • You must be replacing an existing electric storage hot water system
  • An owner-occupier, landlord or tenant can apply for the rebate as long as the dwelling where the hot water system is installed is a principal place of residence
  • The system must be installed and certified by a suitably qualified person

How to Apply

Once the system has been installed you are required to fill out and submit the application form. You are required to attach a copy of your purchase receipts. Solar Choice Australia will assist you with this process.

Note: This rebate is not available as a point of sale discount. You have up to two months after the system has been installed to submit the rebate application form.

State Government Rebates

Selected state governments within Australia also offer rebates to households installing solar hot water systems.

South Australia Rebate

The South Australia government's Solar Hot Water Rebate Scheme currently provides a rebate of up to $500 when installing a compliant solar hot water system.

Eligible Applicants

Applicants must be the owner or part-owner of the dwelling you occupy as your principal place of residence, and hold at least one of the following cards on the day the water heater installation is completed:

  • Centrelink Health Care Card
  • Centrelink Pensioner Concession Card
  • Department of Veterans' Affairs Gold Card - Totally and Permanently Incapacitated
  • Department of Veterans' Affairs Gold Card - War Widow
  • Department of Veterans' Affairs - Extreme Disablement Adjustment

Note: Some dwelling types are excluded. Rebates are limited to one per residence.

Eligible Installations

Eligible applicants who purchase a new solar hot water system for domestic purposes and install it at their principal place of residence are eligible for a rebate if their system fits into any of the following categories:

  • a solar hot water system that replaces the use of an electric hot water system
  • a gas boosted solar hot water system that replaces a gas hot water system
  • a solar hot water system that is installed on a new home that does not have access to reticulated gas
  • a gas boosted solar hot water system that is installed on a new home that does have access to reticulated gas
  • a solar boosted heat pump system that replaces the use of an electric hot water system
